Did you know that on factory farms they snip the little curly pig tails off of baby pigs soon after they're born? They do this because they take piglets away from their mothers when they're still nursing (ten days old!) and throw them into a barn filled with hundreds of other piglets. Piglets still have the sucking reflex and want to nurse but they can't so they start to chew and suck the pig tail in front of them.
To avoid this, the farmers nipp the tail at the bud.
Awful. Just awful. I can't eat pork anymore.

have you read the omnivore's dilemma? i am considering giving up red meat.
k
yes. that's where the curly tail story comes from. We're down to red meat once a week and when we do eat it, we try and do grass fed. EXPENSIVE!
you have not answered my email about a quarter cow. also, i left you someting on y our porch today. if you do not want it, that's fine. it's from tracy. also, i told mary about the pigs and then last night she had a ream that 5 piglets were trapped on an iceburg and she successfully rescued them all. i suspect at some point she will become vagetarian if not vegan. all she talks about is horses and cats and other animals and she plays this vet game we have and talks about being a vet.
k
dream, not ream
and vegetarian. not vagetarian.
geesh. i need to edit before i hit publish.
porch? gift? yippee!
Poor Mary but good for her for rescuing the piglets. I definately see veteranarian in her future. I giggled when I saw vagetarian. I didn't know that was a consumable in the way we consume food. hmm?
I was listening to Omnivore's Dilemma yesterday and decided the way to go is to just not eat. JK. It was the part on big business organic and labels that are not true and such.
now sara, do you still eat veal? You used to love veal!!
no veal for me. I haven't eaten it since our honeymoon in Rome 4 years ago!
Farmers Market people. I now get my pork from the kind smiling man who would never ever snip a pig. and I am looking into a buy part of a cow. I wished we lived closer because I would totally go in on a cow.
